Choukri Mesli

[Algeria] (b 1931/d 2017)


"Choukri Mesli done his Primary and secondary Studies from 1939 to 1949 , time when his family moved from Tlencem to Algiers.. (..) The same year he made his first gouaches and, from 1948 to 1951 he is student of Mohamed Racim at the School of Fine Arts. (..) He participated in 1950 in the creation of the magazine "Sun",  founded the "Group 51" with young poets and painters including Kateb Yacine and M'hamed Issiakhem , and participates in the 'Salon des orientistes'. (..) In 1954, Choukri Mesli entered the Paris School of Fine Arts and realized the following year his first solo exhibition. (..) From 1958 to 1960, he returned to the 'École des Beaux-Arts' and became the first Algerian to obtain a higher diploma in visual Arts. From 1960 to 1962, Mesli stayed in Morocco , in Rabat, where he practices as a drawing teacher..(..) Appointed as a professor of painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Algiers in 1962, in 1963 Mesli was a founding member of the National Union of Plastic Arts (UNAP) (..) In 1982, Choukri Mesli went on a study trip to the United States, New York, San Francisco, Atlanta and Washington, exhibiting with a group of African artists.(..) A retrospective of his works on paper is presented at the Algerian Cultural Center in Paris in 2014."
